The Arthurs' Court

The Arthur's Court stands on the south part of the Old Town Square, under number 6, just next to main entrance to the Old Town Hall.

Bricked, build at the end of XIV century, it wac changing a lot of times through the centuries. From its begenning, he Arthur's Court was the center of the city and the region, where the most important events took place: the Second Peace of Torun was signed here in 1466 by Kazimierz Jagiellonczyk and the Teutonic Grand Master Ludwik von Ehrlichshausen. Many remarkable people received here, too. In XIX century the Teutonic Grand Master Konrad Zõlter von Rotenstein was the guest here. In the next century Arthur's Court was visited by Jozef Pilsudski, Stanislaw Wojciechowski, Ignacy Moscicki and Henryk Wieniawski.


The Arthur's Court was a headquarter of St. George Guild, which was modeled on the King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Than, an the beginning of XVII century, the Court wa rebuild. It's fasade was changed into the reneissance style. In the next century this fasade was covered in paintings presenting the Polish ang Prussians Kings. The peak was decorated by a picture of St. George on a horse. Because of very bad technical state of Building, the Arthur's Court in 1802 was pulled down. After 25 years, according to Hacker project, building the new Arthur's Court started. It lasted for two years. After dissolving St. George's Guild the Arthur's Court fulfilled the role of the city theater. The new Court was much wider and it looked like this one beautiful building today.
